SOUTHEND’S famous carnival procession took place yesterday.

The weather did not disappoint spectators, as thousands flocked to the town and seafront to watch the dazzling shows and performances.

The parade started at 6.45pm from Southchurch Park. Revellers were in for an evening of colourful floats, exciting acts, dancers, big costumes and plenty of flag waving merriment.

Charity organisations and other companies took part in the parade including Havens Hospice, Save the NHS campaign group and JKS Group which was raising funds to support breast cancer, and Myeloma UK.

Audiences shared their views with The Echo.

Nicola Singleton, 40, from Church Road Southend came to the parade with her family.

She said: "We have been coming here for 11 years. There are some years that haven't been great but this year's a lovely one. I think the nice weather has brought in a lot more people today.

"It's nice to have all these community events. We look forward to seeing the Caribbean event."

Her husband David Singleton, 40, added: "With what's been happening to the UK and the world lately I think a lot of people are coming to this event to get their minds off it."

Charlotte Crawley, 48 from Station Road, Southend said: "The carnival is just amazing. It's my first time here because we had always missed it. I will definitely be back next year."

Michelle Oatham, 30, from Shoebury, commented: "It's my second time and I enjoy it immensely, especially the Caribbean dances. I used to be a dancer myself and I just love the performances. This atmosphere gives you a very divine feeling."

She added: "Southend is a lovely coastal town and we should use its resources to run these sorts of events."

Paul Morgan, 50, from Thorpe Bay, said: "I think it's great to see a lot of children enjoying the spectacular carnival. Even though it's a bit chilly today but the atmosphere gives you a warm feeling. I love it here and I've come here many times before."

The parade finished at Shorefield Road at around 9pm
