HUNDREDS of cars could descend on Canvey tonight after a car cruise club arranged a meet on the island.

The drivers are planning to gather at the Morrison’s car park, in Northwick Road, from 7.30pm.

The event, organised by Essex Car Life on Facebook, shows 88 people confirmed as going, with more than 500 others saying they are interested in attending.

It advertises itself as a “cruise event” and claims the cars will be leaving at 10pm to move onto an undisclosed location.

Organisers are calling on lots of people to come along and say it is going to be a “crazy night”.

There have been a number of problems with antisocial driving and racing on the nearby Roscommon Way.

Deputy mayor Barry Campagna said he had recently witnessed some of the antics of the racers along Roscommon Way and was concerned to hear of the planned event.

He said: “Some were doing doughnuts. The noise was unbelievable.

“One must have been doing it for five minutes - he can’t have had any tyres left by the end of it.”

He added that no police officers had turned up to stop them.

And he called on the police to take action to prevent any problems tonight.

Castle Point councillor Ray Howard added he would be taking action to try to prevent the cruise event himself.

He said: “The racers caused so much disruption and unpleasantness and noise for local residents last weekend and there were nowhere near as many as 500 then.

“Many residents are calling for the cars to be crushed when they are caught and I think that is the right way forwards.”

Last Saturday, Essex Police stopped a number of drivers on the road who they believed were driving erratically.

However, residents were frustrated when just the following day, racers returned to Roscommon Way.

No-one from Morrison’s was available to comment, although they have previously tried to install barriers to prevent them from getting into the car park.

Essex Police did not respond with a comment before the Echo went to press.
