SOUTH Essex MPs have had their say as Prime Minister Theresa May launched proceedings that will ultimately bring to an end Britain’s membership of the European Union.

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister signed the letter that starts the formal exit process, triggering Article 50, and the historic document was hand-delivered by a senior diplomat to EU chiefs in Brussels.

It marks the start of complex and contentious negotiations that put the UK on course to break its ties with Brussels by the end of March 2019.

MPs across south Essex have predominantly welcomed the day and voiced their delight in the House of Commons yesterday morning.

Speaking at Westminster, MP for Rayleigh and Wickford Mark Francois said: “This is a great day for our country as we take back control of our national destiny.”

Stephen Metcalfe, member of Parliament for South Basildon and East Thurrock, has welcomed the Prime Minister’s letter to EU Council President Donald Tusk giving formal notification of the decision to leave the EU.

Mr Metcalfe said: “This is a momentous day in the history of our country.

“I am pleased that this decision has been respected and it is now crucial that the Government focuses its efforts on obtaining the best possible deal in the exit negotiations.”

MP for Southend West, Sir David Amess described himself as “delighted” with the start of Britain’s exit from the EU and added: “New opportunities will emerge for us to advantageously trade our goods and services. The decision demonstrates that Britain always determines its own future.”

John Baron, MP for Basildon and Billericay, said: “As a longstanding Eurosceptic, I believe this is a very good day for Britain.

“However, now begins the serious work of intense negotiations with the EU.

“I look forward to supporting the Government in the months and years ahead as it establishes our new relationships with both the EU and the wider world.”

But not all politicians welcomed the day as MEP for the East of England Alex Mayer described it as a “sad day for Britain” adding: “I fear for our future prosperity and place in the world.

“This is a backwards step which ultimately will make our country weaker, poorer and more isolated.”
