TRIBUTES have been paid to a “wonderful” council chairman who dedicated his life to helping the community.

Vic Leach, who was a member of Hawkwell Parish Council for over 30 years, died last week, aged 70.

He also served on Rochford District Council for over 30 years.

Arthur Williams, chairman of Rochford Parish Council, went to school with Mr Leach. Their paths crossed again due to their interest in local politics.

Mr Williams said: “He was a lovely guy. We first met in 1952 at what was Victoria Avenue Primary School, in Southend, and we also went to secondary school together.

“I never saw him again until eight years ago when I joined Hawkwell Parish Council, and there he was! He was always a very genuine guy and it was a privilege and pleasure to work with him.

“He was always a doer, even in school. He was always proactive in the community. Right up to the very end, he was working really hard.

“His family are very proud of him, he was a very brave man.”

Parish councillor Jo Mcpherson added: “He was just a wonderful man. He was old school and always there for the community.

“He was a really hard worker and he always said it as it was. He will be missed.”

Mr Leach represented Hawkwell East ward during his time as a district councillor between 1995 and 2002.

Family friend Darren Parsons, a councillor in Ashingdon, said: “Vic was well-respected in the community and with his smile and lovely nature he will be truly missed.

“I have known Vic and his family for years, his wife used to be at my nursery in Rochford. Rest in peace.”

A spokesman for Hawkwell Parish Council said: “Members and staff are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of our long-standing chairman Vic Leach. Vic will be sorely missed as a valued member of the council and also within the community.”

Mr Leach leaves behind wife Maureen and daughters Kate and Nikki.
