REPORTS have surfaced that two men, who are suspected immigrants, have been detained after jumping out the back of a van delivering kitchens from Italy.

A number of police vehicles rushed to the scene in Leigh, at the junction of Leigh Hall Road and London Road where new flats are being built.

One witness who asked not to be named said: "I was just up on the scaffolding when the lorry pulled up.

"As soon as the back door was opened, two immigrants jumped out of the back and tried to run.

"That's when a couple of builders grabbed them and moved them onto the building site then called the police.

"Within a couple of minutes, several cars and a van had arrived to take them away. Police stayed until the whole lorry had been unloaded to make sure no one else was in there."

A police spokesman said: "Police were called to reports of two men found in a lorry in Leigh Hall Road, Leigh-on-Sea at around 10.10am today (Wednesday, February 22).

"Officers attended.

"Two men have been detained and will be taken to custody.
Police have also notified the Border Force."
