RESIDENTS have fumed at overflowing dog waste bins across the island.

It comes as dog walkers have grown frustrated with waste bags being left across parks because bins have not been emptied by council contractors.

An area by Canvey Rugby Club, in Dovervelt Road, has attracted a furious response from residents rounding on the council.

Sarah Mahoney, 35, lives in the Newlands area of Canvey and walks her dog Nero every day.

She claims that the bin hasn’t been emptied for about four weeks but feels dog owners are not to blame for the dumped plastic bags.

She said: “It really irritated me as I’m a dog walker and it’s really frustrating the number of bins which seem to look like that.

“I walk between five and 13 miles with my dog every day and on the route I take from Newlands to the sea wall and on from there that is the only bin.

“I understand people complaining saying people shouldn’t be leaving the bags by the bin but I don’t want to carry a bag of dog mess for that distance.

“If they are providing poo bins and want people to use them they should be emptied; that one hasn’t been emptied for about four weeks.

“One of the biggest complaints on Canvey is irresponsible dog owners so it’s a shame people who do try to be responsible are now being complained about.”

Martin Tucker, town mayor of Canvey Town Council, says it frustrating that the borough councils bin have remain unemptied.

Mr Tucker says the town council, which manages bins near to Canvey Lake, ensures all bins are emptied weekly.

He said: “Having the mess there actually stops people from being responsible. The very least we can do is to make sure that they have somewhere to put the waste.

“I walk my dog everyday at the lake, and they are emptied every week without fail.”

A Castle Point Council spokesman said: “The council has noted that there has been a problem with the emptying of bins over the last few days.

“We are discussing this with the contractor to ensure a speedy resolution. Should anybody find a dog or litter bin overflowing please can they report it to the council via the website or on 01268 882200.”
