CHILDREN thoroughly enjoyed seeing and learning all about animals and butterflies at a special half-term event.

Tropical Wings, in South Woodham Ferrers, organised plenty of fun activities all focusing on the amazing world of wildlife, but with an emphasis on learning about the animal and insect world about us.

There were butterfly crafts, big bugs and the chance to get up close and personal to see some of creatures.

Hundreds of families went along and thoroughly enjoyed the event, which took place throughout the half-term week at the popular attraction.

There was also face painting and a soft play area to enjoy - and both proved extremely popular.

Nicki Meyn, head keeper at the zoo, said: “The half-term has been really good. “We have been really busy - which is how we like it.

“There has been loads going on all week.

“There were lots of encounters and free craft sessions.

“Everyone has really been enjoying it.

“It has been a lovely week.

“People still visited despite the cold weather at the weekend.”

Tropical Wings, which opened in 2000, has grown from being predominately a butterfly house to a zoo, with a range of animals including wallabies, frogs and lemurs.
