A 15-MONTH-OLD boy needed emergency surgery after cutting himself on glass that had been kicked and smashed outside his house.

Vandals had been kicking the bottles left out ahead of the glass collection down the street, when one smashed outside the house where Cody lives in Vange.

When the door was opened the following morning, bits of glass fell into the hallway.

In a freak accident, Cody picked a piece up and sliced his finger open on a shard of glass.

It was left gaping open from the top to the bottom of his finger.

He was rushed to Broomfield Hospital, but had to return the following day as doctors were concerned he had ruptured his tendons.

His grandmother, Tina Gardner, said: “I was worried sick. There was blood literally pouring from the wound.

“He is so tiny for anaesthetic, but they had to check there was no damage.

“Luckily they didn’t find any, but he has had it scraped, cleaned and stitched back together.

“He is back in a week to have the wound re-dressed and has to have physio.

“He has to see a hand specialist weekly for six months at least.

“The poor little mite even got a certificate for being so brave, love him.

“It’s annoying because if the bin collection date hadn’t been altered the glass bins wouldn’t have been out the night before, so the yobs wouldn’t have been able to kick them all down the street.”

The little one was sent home with a huge cast to protect the stitches in his finger and the cheeky youngster seems to be recovering well at home.

However, he has to go back to hospital tomorrow and needs ongoing care while it heals.

Tina added: “We all feel so guilty that he got hurt as he is just a baby.

“Our house is like Fort Knox as we have really tried to keep him safe and then this happened.

“You wouldn’t think that the actions of mindless thugs could have such a devastating effect, or that changing the bin collection day would have such an impact. It is awful that this has happened.”
