RESCUE dogs could be missing out on their forever homes due to roadworks.

Dogs Trust Basildon has posted on its website warning people about the delays being caused by the Nevendon Road roundabout works.

It is encouraging people to leave more time to get to the centre and not to put off visiting because of the delays the works are causing.

Lisa Cooper, rehoming centre manager at Dogs Trust Basildon, said: "Dogs Trust Basildon has seen an impact on visitor numbers since the major roadworks outside the Nevendon Road roundabout began.

"Unfortunately, these works cannot be avoided when visiting the rehoming centre but we ask potential visitors not to be deterred by the additional journey time the roadworks may create, and to remember that, whilst you may be waiting for a little longer in traffic, we have around 60 dogs at any one time waiting to meet you.

"Some of our dogs have been waiting for years to find their forever home and you may just be the special someone to give them the second chance they deserve.

"We thank all our visitors for their patience and ask everyone to please leave plenty of journey time when paying us a visit.

"Our four-legged friends will be sure to give plenty of wags and licks in return!"

Motorists are currently in the midst of eight months of roadworks which started in May.

A number of changes are being made including widening the roundabout from two to three lanes, introducing of a new left turn lane from the A127 to Wickford, and installing new traffic lights.

Essex County Council hopes the work will be completed early next year.

A spokesperson for Essex Highways said: "Improvements at this junction are very important to help keep up with the increase in traffic going into and out of Basildon.

"This vital work will also support the continued growth of local businesses and charities, such as the Dogs Trust, for years to come.

"We continue to carefully monitor congestion arising from the lane closures to see if we can modify any of these to help the situation.

"We would advise motorists to allow extra time for their journey during the works, and any businesses that have concerns should get in contact with us."
