A BLIND woman who has suffered two strokes told how she is trapped in one room of her home.

Elaine Williams, 48, of Long Riding, Basildon, who was also hit by a car and is unable to walk following surgery on her feet, is confined to the living room of her three-storey council house.

She cannot get up and down the stairs without help and only leaves the house for hospital appointments, with an ambulance picking her up and dropping her back.

She is urging Basildon Council, which needs more family homes, to move her to a smaller property on one level.

Mrs Williams said: “All this trouble is making me very stressed, which is not good for my condition.

“I had my first stroke at the end of 2014 and then I had a second stroke in April 2015, which I am still recovering from at the current time.

“I was then hit by a car in Church Road, Pitsea when I was walking. I just didn’t see the car coming and it seemed to come out of nowhere.

“I have lived in this property for about five years now and we have been battling with the council to find me a better home.”

Her daughter Cassey Williams, 20, said the situation is causing stress for the whole family.

She said: “My three siblings and I have even resorted to lifting mum down stairs in her wheelchair to get her out.

“This is not only dangerous for mum but it is also dangerous for us as well."

She has approached councillors asking for help with her mum's housing issues.

Andrew Buxton, Labour councillor for St Martins ward said: “I think this is shocking.

"It has been going on too long and even I feel as if I am just hitting a brick wall with the problem and nothing is getting sorted.

"Something needs to be done about this very quickly as it is affecting this woman’s life.”

A Basildon Council spokesman said: “We can confirm that Mrs Williams application for re-housing remains active with priority, meaning that it is the highest priority awarded under medical grounds.

“We are fully aware of her case and are currently seeking a suitable property that can be adapted to meet her needs. Although we are actively doing all we can to assist, this process can take some time. We will update Mrs Williams as soon as the right property is made available.”
