DOG owners are considering placing muzzles on their pets when they go on walks after yet another pet died from suspected poisoning.

A Scottish terrier, owned by a retired Hockley couple, has died 48 hours after supposedly eating poisoned food from bushes in Hockley Woods.

The incident is the latest in a string of suspected poisonings in the area in recent months.

There have been several reported poisonings in rural Rochford, including Hockley Woods, Ashingdon Park, Cherry Orchard Park, Spencers Park in Hockley, and areas of Rayleigh.

Neighbour Linda Thompson was shocked to hear of what happened to the little dog after believing previous stories were simply scaremongering and now wants to warn dog owners of what is happening.

Mrs Thompson, of Barnwell Drive, Hockley, said: “My elderly neighbour always took their little Scottie dog to Hockley Woods for his walk. On the last occasion the little dog went under a bush and before he could be stopped had eaten something there.

“Within 48 hours, this dear little dog had to be put to sleep with multiple organ failure.”

She said the vets confirmed the dog had been poisoned.

The 65-year-old continued: “Please be cautious when walking your dogs, this elderly couple are devastated.

“When you know someone that that comes across it, it really strikes home.

“My daughter is considering buying a plastic muzzle to put over her dog's mouth when he’s let off so she knows he can’t pick anything up and eat it.”

Writing on social media, dog walkers expressed their disgust at the situation.

Amanda Jane Copley said: “Haven't walked my dog there since the last report of poisoning but there have been so many reports lately of places where dogs have been poisoned that I'm running out of places to go. So sad for yet another poor dog.”

A spokesman for Rochford District Council said the authority had received no confirmed reports of dog poisoning in parks and open spaces.

She added: "However, we are aware of a number of rumours circulating on social media in relation to incidents in the district.

"Therefore, we have been liaising with the police in case any incidents do come to light."

Dog walkers can call the council on 01702 546366 of police on 101 if they have any suspicions or information.
