A MOTORIST is leading calls for traffic cameras at Sadlers Farm after fracturing his collarbone and ribs in a crash.

Steve Emery, 53, from Canvey was injured in the shunt which took place at the roundabout shortly after 9.45pm on Sunday.

Mr Emery, an engineer, was travelling in his Vauxhall Vectra on the A13 from Basildon as he approached the roundabout.

He said: “I came up to the first set of lights which turned green and I was just coasting up to the next set before you take a right to get onto Canvey Way.

“I knew they were about to turn green, and they did so before I went over the white line. I quickly looked to my left, where there was a car waiting at the set of lights coming from Benfleet. Suddenly a car appeared from absolutely nowhere. I crashed as I had no time to get out of the way.

“It does seem to happen quite a lot at the junction, and I think cameras and yellow boxes like the ones in London will stop this from happening on a regular basis.”

The accident means Mr Emery will now have to take around six weeks off work, and has ruined plans he had for Christmas.

He said: “My daughter does a lot of ice skating, and I had been training to appear on the ice with her at a Christmas show at Riverside, in Chelmsford “Unfortunately that is now gone completely. In some ways I was lucky, as the airbags saved me and there were also some really kind people behind me who gave me shelter in their car at the time of the crash.

“It’s just a really poor time for this to happen.”

Ray Howard, deputy county councillor for Highways, says he will raise the issue at a departmental meeting today.

He said: “I think this is something we have to explore really.

“I have spoken with Mr Emery and his injuries are very nasty. That junction has been a problem for a long time. It will take some time to put boxes and cameras in place as there would need to be a traffic regulation order put in place.”

“We must be seen to be taking action here, and I will be bringing the matter up at the next highways meeting.”

Essex Police are looking into the crash.
