A 20-year-old man has needed surgery in hospital following a vicious assault at a nightclub in Billericay.

The man, from Wickford, was punched in the jaw in an apparently unprovoked attack at Reids nightclub in Laindon Road last night.

Following the attack, which left him with a smashed jaw, broken teeth and bleeding gums, staff at the bar drove him to Basildon Hospital.

He was later transferred to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford for specialist treatment.

His family say that he might lose his teeth.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Police were contacted just after 1am this morning, Sunday, October 25, with reports a 20-year-old man from Wickford was at Basildon Hospital having been injured inside Reid’s bar, Laindon Road, Billericay, earlier in the evening.

"The man was receiving treatment to facial injuries having been punched.

"Police have taken photographs of the man’s injuries and will be arranging a suitable time to take a statement."

Anyone who witnessed the incident should contact police at Basildon on 101.
