A SENIOR Rochford District Council officer has admitted the area’s rural roads are a magnet for flytippers.

Richard Evans, head of environmental services was speaking after the council was forced to clear another pile of rubbish from the roadside in Southend Road, Great Wakering.

The rubbish – including potentially dangerous asbestos, an old bathroom suite and builders’ waste – was dumped on Tuesday and cleared the next day by the council.

Mr Evans said: “Unfortunately there’s a situation in quiet, rural areas where people do dispose of waste, which is annoying.

“There was some asbestos found with this particular flytip, so there was a slight delay in it being removed, but it has been taken away now.

“We aim to remove flytips within 24 hours of them being reported.”

Mr Evans said residents could also report flytipping via the Rochford Sita smartphone app.

Sita is the firm contracted by the council to clear the district’s waste.
