Chelmsford Museum has created the perfect formula for the school summer holidays: crazy science experiments, interactive learning and acres of space for children to let off steam.

This summer Chelmsford Museum is launching ‘Summer of Science’ at Sandford Mill, Chelmsford, where kids will be filled with wonder when they take part in fun experiments and discover why a balloon doesn’t explode with a giant needle in it, and how to make a toilet roll fly!

Each Friday throughout the school holidays the ‘Summer of Science’ sessions will be jam-packed with ‘edutainment’ in the Science Theatre from Mad Science including carbon dioxide balloon racing, hands-on workshops to create the colours of the rainbow – plus awesome explosions – as well as exploring the science of flight with flying displays from birds of prey, and other exciting activities.

Dave Finkle, Museum Business Manager, Chelmsford Museums, says: ”We’re here to make science fun and to open up young minds to the wonders of the scientific world. Summer of Science gives children the opportunity to discover how fun and interesting science can be, let their hair down and get some hands-on scientific experience”.

Dave continued: “Summer of Science is an exciting display of discovery and invention to interest children of all ages and the young at heart, where everyone will learn something new.”

At Sandford Mill there will also be the opportunity to explore the industrial heritage collection in the old Mill House. Plus, there’s a chance to go on a bug hunt in the nature area and also learn about Chelmsford geology that’s beneath our feet with the Essex Rocks team.

Sandford Mill is part of Chelmsford Museums and is located at Sandford Mill Road, Chelmsford, CM2 6NY. Summer of Science takes place every Friday from 27 July until 31 August at Sandford Mill, there will be two sessions each day, one at 10am to 12.30pm, and one at 2pm to 4.30pm.

The cost of each session is £5 per person, with children aged up to 2 years old free. Sessions must be booked in advance at www.chelmsford.gov.uk/museumevents.
