A spate of purse thefts have been taking place in Witham town centre.
Several shoppers have had their belongings, primarily purses, stolen so far this week.
It is believed the thieves may be targeting shoppers whilst they are in Card Factory in the Newland Shopping Centre.
Tina Townsend, chairman of Witham Neighbourhood Watch, called for people to be vigilant whilst out in the town.
“It is not acceptable this is happening and people should be able to shop in the town without being victims of crime,” she said.
“We do not want people to feel uncomfortable shopping in the town, but people need to be extra careful.”
Witham Neighbourhood Watch is offering bells and chains for purses.
The bells are free of charge, whereas the chains cost £2.50.
