Witham Town's famous superfan is hoping the national exposure he is gaining for the club can help pull in the crowds at home games.

Non-league supporter James Beardwell has been receiving praise from across the football community in recent weeks, after a video of him chanting on his own during his team's most recent away defeat went viral.

Tonight, Mr Beardwell is set to be interviewed by Sky Sports before the club's home game against Heybridge Swifts, and is hoping his fame can lead to him taking Witham Town's name on to bigger and better things.

"I would love to go on Soccer AM, it would be a dream come true,"

"I would like to meet some footballing legends like Jimmy Bullard.

"I would really love to see more people coming to the matches, especially Witham's home games."

Mr Beardwell, who has learning difficulties and appeared on Channel 4 show The Undateables, chanted throughout the full 90 minutes of Witham Town's away game at Bostik League rivals Grays Athletic, despite being the only away fan at the game.

A video of him singing "Beardwell's On Fire" - a riff on the popular Wigan Athletic chant for goalscoring hero Will Grigg - has been watched more than 700,000 times after Twitter user Andrea Smith posted it online.

Mr Beardwell said: "I have supported Witham Town for 12-and-a-half years. I just love the club and I have a lot of passion for them.

"I go to nearly every single match and I try and keep up my singing through the 90 minutes.

"I give them all of my support even during the defeats.

"Win or lose I will keep singing through thick and thin."

Mark Nicholls, chairman of Witham Town Football Club, said Mr Beardwell was fantastic ambassador for the club.

"A lot of people know the club because of James," he said.

"This is his moment and we want him to enjoy it.

"He is really good for the club and the club is really good for him. James is such a superb guy."

Earlier this season, Mr Beardwell took new fiancee Claire Styles to her very first Witham Town game, and is planning to take her to many more in the future.

Witham Town manager Adam Flint said: "He loves Witham Town that is for sure - that and his fiancée Claire as he keeps telling us.

"The players appreciate what he does and they acknowledge it. I do not think you get enough of that interaction in higher levels of football."
