A FINAL football tournament took place to remember a talented student who died on a zebra crossing.

Football fan Alexander Ramsdale-Launder, 13, died after a crash with a bus in Layer Road while cycling to school in 2007.

The Stanway School pupil was a skilled football player and avid supporter of Liverpool, Carlisle United and Colchester United.

The school hosted the 10th and final memorial match for him on Friday and some Colchester United players attended.

Alex's mum, Natalie, said: "One of his best friends who is a PE teacher brought his pupils to the match, and the next day the teachers took part.

"It's a really nice close to that chapter, it's going to be hard but the school has been amazing, they have been so supportive over the years.

"This is a really fitting tribute."

She said Colchester United has also been very supportive and offered the winners of the tournament an hour of training.

Year 7 B teams from Stanway, The Gilberd School, Thomas Lord Audley (TLA), Colchester High School, and William-de-Ferrers took part in the tournament.

TLA emerged as victors, winning 3-1.

Ex-student and Colchester United footballer Sammie Szmodics attended to present the medals and trophies.

Nick Mussett, assistant headteacher at The Stanway School, said: "To further remember Alexander, an All-Stars match was organised for Saturday.

"Staff, past and present, joined by a number of guest players, joined together to create the Stanway All-Stars team.

"Natalie, Alexander's mother, and Harry, Alexander's brother, pulled together many friends of Harry's and Alexander's to create the formidable Launder All-Stars.

"After a superbly contested match the final score ended 3-1 to Launder All-Stars.

"Thank you to everyone who supported both events and helped to ensure it was a wonderful two days to remember Alexander."
