Following the announcement popular zoo Tropical Wings will close its doors we have taken a look back through our archives at the history of the site.

The zoo in South Woodham Ferrers is run by Dennis and Rona Strong.

It opened as the Tropical Wings Butterfly and Bird Gardens back in the year 2000 expanding to accommodate more birds and animals in the last 17 years.

It featured exotic butterflies, birds, reptiles, invertebrates and a small collection of parrots.

In 2001 the Bird Gardens and Café opened and were followed by outdoor play areas in 2003 and indoor play areas in 2008.

The site became known as Tropical Wings Zoo after taking on more mammals and reptiles.

Since making the announcement last week the zoo has thanked people for the support shown.

The decision was taken due to the owners' ill health and work is now underway to find new homes for the animals before the closure on December 3.

A post on the zoo's Facebook page, said: "Since our announcement, we would like to say how overwhelmed and grateful we are for the kind messages and offers of support.

"Please be assured that we are working closely with zoo professionals across the UK to secure the best possible homes for our beloved animals. Thank you from the team at Tropical Wings."

The zoo has declined to comment further.

There is speculation that the site could be sold for housing, but this has not been confirmed.

People should call 01245 425394 to discuss refunds, with the customer service line open after the closure.
