FIREFIGHTERS were called to Tiptree after a tumble dryer caught fire in a flat.
Crews received reports of a fire in Walnut Tree Way. A build-up of fluff in the tumble dryer caused a spark, starting the blaze.
When firefighters arrived they found the appliance still had clothes inside it which were on fire. They quickly extinguished the fire before it could spread to the kitchen.
The kitchen only suffered slight smoke damage.
The resident was at home at the time and was able to call the fire service immediately and followed safety advice to get out of the home safely, after the fire broke out on Wednesday, shortly after 3pm.
A spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: “Incidents like this show how important it is to take extra care using a tumble dryer. This incident is thought to have been started by a build-up of fluff in the tumble dryer’s filter.
“The fire service recommends that you clean the filters after each use to ensure they do not become blocked with fluff, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and don’t use the tumble dryers at night or while unattended.
“Items should be removed from the dryer immediately after the cycle and shaken loose to assist cooling.”
