A LUXURY vintage steam train is all set to make its long-awaited debut journey in Essex - and will help raise cash for a new adult hospice.

The world famous Belmond British Pullman, the sister train to the iconic Venice Simplon Orient Express, will be making a special journey to the county’s coast.

It is due to arrive on November 3 next year with all profits from the journey going towards the new Fair Havens Hospice, opposite Priory Park, Southend, which will care for seriously ill adults across the Southend and Castle Point boroughs.

The plan is for the train to depart from Southend Victoria and guests will enjoy a gala evening which begins with a champagne reception followed by a four-course gourmet dinner and wine.

During the evening guests will also be entertained by a jazz band and singers.

Havens fundraiser Louise Gloyne said: “This is the first time the Bellmond British Pullman has come to the county so this is a really unique and exciting opportunity to ride aboard this historic train.

“It really will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience to enjoy a fabulous gala event in the luxurious surrounds of the Belmond British Pullman, all whilst helping to support a new adult hospice for south Essex.”

The restored 1920s train has quite a history.

It has sheltered royalty and been a star of the silver screen.

And each whimsically-named carriage has its own story to tell.

Those who get onboard will be able to explore Audrey, Vera, Minerva and more discovering each has a very distinctive personality.

A spokesman for Belmond added: “We are a delight in antique-style marquetry, vintage lighting and heritage upholstery!

“Our passion for preserving history is evident at every turn.”

The planned new Fair Havens Hospice will care for twice as many patients - 16 - as the current Westcliff hospice.

More details and final plans will be ready to show to the public next year.

A limited number of tickets for next year’s ride are now available at £299 per person and available in bookings of two, four or entire carriages can be booked for up to 26 people.

Gift vouchers can also be purchased in time for Christmas.

Tickets include return travel, champagne reception, canapés, four course dinner, one bottle of wine per couple, coffee and petit fours.
