A rally by the far-right group, the EDL, was called off in Chelmsford after only six people turned up to show their support.

The demonstration began at 1pm on Saturday and was expected to attract 30 people according to the Facebook event, but only six supporters showed their faces.

But the intended march, which started outside Argos store on Springfield Road, was cancelled following a low turnout.

One protester brought a St George's flag which had their slogan 'non-racist - non-violent - no longer silent' branded on it, along with 'RIP Lee Rigby' - a message which the Army Drummer's mother has asked the group not to use.

Counter-protesters were also in attendance, who outnumbered the EDL supporters.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: "Essex Police was informed of a planned march by the English Defence League in Chelmsford on Saturday, September 23.

"People have the legal right to protest, however, we put appropriate plans in place with our partners Chelmsford City Council to ensure public safety and that there were no breaches of the peace or unlawful behaviour."

The EDL has been contacted for comment.
