A CAR meet scheduled to take place in Harwich has been called off after talks between Essex Police and the organisers.
Insp Darren Deex of the Tendring Community Policing Team said his team were working to try and stamp out nuisance driving in the area and did not believe the event set for Sunday would help with this.
He said: "Whilst I have no issue whatsoever with well planned events taking place in the Tendring District, including car meets, I am always mindful of the effect any event has on the local community.
"We have recently been working hard in the Harwich area to deal with nuisance motorists, some of whom are committing serious road traffic offences due to the manner of their driving.
"I have no doubt the intentions of this car 'meet' were well intended however as with any event we must feel assured that there is a sound event management plan in place.
"Unfortunately on this occasion these assurances could not be given and therefore following discussions the organiser has rightly decided to cancel the event.
"I would encourage anyone still intending on coming to Harwich tomorrow night for this purpose not to come.
"We will deal robustly with anyone committing anti-social driving or road traffic offences which will include using our full range of powers to seize vehicles".
