A YOUTH charity has been recognised after continuously working to provide a safe and caring community for its young members.

Braintree Youth Project (BYPC) was awarded the Match Room trophy by Essex Boys and Girls Clubs on May 12.

The trophy, which was originally donated to the clubs by darts legend Barry Hearn, is awarded to the affiliated club which did the most to help themselves during the course of the year.

The trophy was presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Essex at the Essex Boys and Girls Club AGM to board member Anna England.

She said: “It was a total shock. We went to the AGM to support Essex Boys and Girls Clubs, who are a huge help and support to BYPC, as we always do.

“The next thing I knew, I was receiving a huge cup and a really great round of applause. It was brilliant. We don’t do what we do for recognition, but it is so nice to receive such a massive honour from people that we work with and respect so much.”

BYPC has had a change of premises, staff and board members in the last 12 months, but has continuously offered their services to young people in and around Braintree.

Chairman Nigel Warner said: “We are going through a process of renovation in our great new premises, but still meeting as normal.

“We are fundraising for the removal of a couple of stud walls, a new kitchen and snack area, new toilet facilities and to address the important issue of disabled access for both of the buildings.”

The charity would like to hear from anyone who wants to offer money or skills to help. Email contact@braintreeyouth.org.uk or call 01376 323764.
