A DAD feared for the safety of his children after a car smashed into the side of his car before making off.

Dave Dawson, from Toppesfield, was driving towards Sible Hedingham on the A1017 when he said a car came speeding in the opposite direction.

The car caught the side of his blue Vauxhall Astra, which had two of his three children inside, at around 6.45pm on Sunday.

Mr Dawson, of Church Lane, said: “The driver tried to overtake a van in a 40mph zone, I swerved to avoid him.

“He clipped my wing mirror which was hit that hard it exploded on impact and shattered my window into my face and over my children.

“I u-turned, caught him in traffic and cut in front to stop him.

“I got out and asked why he didn’t stop, I told him I wanted insurance details and walked the length of my car to retrieve my phone to call the police.

“My eldest son took his number plate and he drove at me to get away, which was witnessed.”

The father-of-three claimed his son had to shout to warn him to get out of the way, so he was not hit by the driver who sped off.

His window was smashed, alongside the wing-mirror and there were minor scratches to the door.

He said: “I reckon the actual bodywork of the cars was less than an inch apart, any closer and it would have been a proper collision.

“Although the damage is annoying it’s the flippant attitude and endangerment of lives that’s really got me riled.”

Mr Dawson was driving with his sons Demetri, 14, and Finley, 11, who were shaken up but not hurt.

He said thankfully Finley’s twin, Kain, was not in the car at the time.

Mr Dawson called the police and later reported the incident online, saying something needed to be done soon before someone is killed or seriously injured by a dangerous driver.

Anyone with information should call 101.
