THE trial of an alleged fraudster accused of offences dating back more than four years could be delayed again.

Norman Fowler is due to answer 18 charges after allegedly conning Gumtree buyers out of tens of thousands of pounds.

A trial has been scheduled at Chelmsford Crown Court on April 17 but discussions are ongoing about whether he is fit to stand trial or enter pleas.

Fowler, 38, formerly of Propelair Way, Colchester, is in custody. He was arrested in Alicante, Spain in October last year.

He is accused of running a scam involving Rolex watches and cameras.

The prosecution claims he committed nine counts of fraud by false representation, by dishonestly advertising items for sail in order to make a gain, and nine counts of theft after allegedly taking money but not providing goods.

Among the items included in the charges were two Rolex watches worth £5,500 and £5,320 as well as cameras worth £5,030, £1,160, £1,415, £1,150 and £550.

Others were allegedly conned out of £650 for an IMAC and £565 for an Apple Macbook.

The total fraud, and the associated thefts, will amount to about £21,000 if proven.

A hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday confirmed the provisional trial date next month. No pleas have been entered.
