PARKING bosses want to be able to prosecute people who park their cars inconsiderately on pathways.

Speaking at a full Colchester Council meeting on Wednesday, Stanway councillor Jessica Scott-Boutell said she was concerned about paths in London Road, in Stanway, being impassible for people with pushchairs or wheelchairs due to inconsiderate drivers parking partly or wholly on pavements.

Mike Lilley (Lab), the councillor responsible for safer communities at Colchester Council , said he was aware of the issue and wanted the North Essex Parking Partnership officers to be given the power to enforce sanctions.

He added: “This is a problem across Colchester and stems from people thinking they are doing other people a favour by parking on the pavement - but they are not.

“It is a police issue and our officers are not able to issue tickets to people for parking on the pavement.”

However, Mr Lilley said he had not given up and may have another solution.

He said: “I have spoken to Elliott Judge, the district commander for Colchester, to ask if the North Essex Parking Partnership can take on the fines for this issue.”
