HUNDREDS of people took part in Colchester’s 200th parkrun.

The growing popularity of the event combined with residents’ new year resolutions led to a bumper 396 participants.

Those staying, or getting, fit are also helping to save the lives of others with donations from park runners and contributions from councillors Darius Laws and Daniel Ellis’ locality budgets helping to pay for a new defibrillator.

It was donated to Colchester Council on Saturday and will be kept at the rangers’ station in the park.

John Wheatley said: “I am immensely proud to have been the event director of Colchester Castle parkrun since its inception during which time over 6,100 different runners have taken part.

“Whether running or walking, parkrun welcomes all.

“Over nearly four years we have seen many start reluctantly who are now firm addicts. We could not do this without the support of the authorities and of all the wonderful volunteers who give their time each week.”

Annie Feltham, councillor responsible for leisure at Colchester Council, said: “We hope the defibrillator does not need to be used, however, it’s good to know it’s available if necessary.”

Other parkruns in Colchester include ones in Mersea and a junior parkrun at Old Heath Rec.
