A DECISION on whether to introduce a weight limit on a road near the A12 has been called in to cabinet.

Proposals, supported by a local councillor and Essex Police, were put forward to Essex Highways to limit the weight of vehicles travelling on Oak Road, Rivenhall, to 7.5 tonnes.

However the land owner objected saying that the weight limit would prevent his agricultural vehicles from accessing the field on the west side of the road.

A report compiled by an Essex Highways officer recommended that the proposals be abandoned until after the proposed scheme to improve the A12 by Highways England is implemented.

However an unknown councillor has called the decision in for reassessment by Essex County Council.

The letter states:”The decision to abandon this very long standing and strongly supported scheme is not a balanced one.

“The benefit to local residents of reducing HGV traffic along Oak Road and greatly reducing incidents of vehicles running down the footways greatly outweighs what would appear to be the diversion of a likely relatively small number of local agricultural HGV movements which it may be possible anyway to allow unfettered access for by amending the order and indeed the objector already runs his vehicles through the existing weight limit further along Oak Road.”

If the decision to call in the decision is accepted, the council will be called to reassess the proposals.
