A MAN has been committed to a secure hospital after admitting killing his mother.

Javid Ahmed, 26, of Fambridge Close, Maldon, appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court this afternoon.

Sentencing Judge Charles Gratwicke QC decided to commit Ahmed to a secure hospital for treatment, rather than hand out a prison sentence.

After hearing evidence from mitigation and prosecution, Judge Gratwicke ruled that Ahmed’s “horrific” actions were directly attributed to his mental health.

Ahmed was made subject of a Mental Health Act Section 37 Hospital Order and a Section 47 restraining order, which will require judicial overview to determine if he can be released if progress is made.

Gratwicke told Ahmed: "No one reading the papers or listening to the facts of this case could feel anything other than shock, revulsion and sickness, to the manner of which Miss Begum died.

“She was attacked in the house, where you used knives and a sword. She must have been absolutely terrified as she ran from that house followed by you, and going to the ground where you savagely and horrifically killed her.

“From listening to all the reports today, I can accept that this act can be directly attributed to your mental health, and thus I feel a Section 37 and Section 41 order would be most appropriate.”

Ahmed denied murdering his mother Amina Begum, 47, on March 24, but admitted one count of manslaughter by diminished responsibility at a hearing last month.

Amina was found lying in the street in Fambridge Close earlier this year with multiple injuries.

She later died as a result of her injuries.

Expert psychologists assessed Ahmed and recommended he be allowed to rely on the partial defence due to his impaired mental functions.
