TOUGH reservists put their training to good use when they took on the Bear Grylls survival race.

Members of 254 Medical Regiment demonstrated the survival hero's never say die attitude when they tackled the challenging obstacle course.

The race involved a six mile trail run with a number of military and survival themed obstacles along the way.

The team were also sponsored to do the course and raised £1,055 for the Colchester-based Robin Cancer Trust.

Corporal Jamie Jones said the charity, which aims to raise awareness of germ cell cancers including both testicular and ovarian cancers is one close to their hearts.

Cpl Jones, 37, said: "The 254 Medical Regiment likes to support our community.

"A number of people in the unit have suffered with germ cell cancer such as testicular cancer including myself.

"The charity offered me some good advice and support whilst dealing with the cancer."

Cpl Jones is now clear of cancer and says he believes it was probably because he went to see the doctor as soon as he found a lump.

He is now a student paramedic with the East of England Ambulance Service.

A total of ten soldiers and officers took on the challenge having undertaken extra training including running and gym work.

Cpl Jones said: "It was demanding as there were plenty of hills and it was warm due to the sun being out.

"At the end of the day just before the finish it did rain quite heavily but we were glad it held out until the end."
