A FORMER England international footballer claims to have been the victim of a miscarriage of justice after his £60,000 Porsche Cayenne was caught speeding through the Rhondda Valley.

Retired footballer turned celebrity Kieron Dyer was convicted in absence at Cardiff Magistrates' Court in May for allegedly refusing to identify who was driving at the time.

But when the 37-year-old I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here contestant appeared at Colchester Magistrates' Court he claimed he did not know about the trial and had informed the authorities who was behind the wheel.

On May 9 he was fined £660 and ordered to pay £145 in costs and charges.

Dyer's conviction was quashed after he made a statutory declaration in front of magistrates in Colchester yesterday.

He faces a re-trial on one count of failing to identify the driver of the motor vehicle, at Cardiff Magistrates' Court in August.

Dyer, of Cony Bye Lane, West Bergholt, told the court: "I was speechless when I got a letter from the bailiffs saying I had to pay the fine.

"I did not know what it was for."

The alleged speeding took place in October last year. Dyer moved house in January and the trial took place in May.

It is possible the court notification was missed in the move.

Dyer added: "I rang up the court and they said it was for failing to identify the driver.

"I said I did. I signed the letter to say I was not driving the vehicle. I gave the name and address of the person who was driving the vehicle.

"I did not get a letter saying go to court.

"I have six points of my licence I did not know about as well."

Dyer played for Ipswich Town, Newcastle United, West Ham United, QPR and Middlesbrough during his career as well as 33 times for England.

He became known to a new generation of fans after befriending Chris Eubank and "Lady C" during the ITV reality show.
