COLCHESTER has passed GO to win its very own Monopoly board in a landslide victory.

More than 3,000 of you cast your votes to beat Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn, Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury to the top spot, winning Colchester 48 per cent of the total votes.

The finished product will hit shelves in October, in time for Christmas shopping.

Great Yarmouth came second in the poll, with 21 per cent of 7,000 votes, and King’s Lynn came third, with 14 per cent.

Sudbury was the least popular location, with just three per cent of the poll.

A total of 22 Colchester landmarks will replace the likes of Mayfair, Piccadilly Circus and even the Go To Jail square, and Colchester residents will be able to vote for their neighbourhood to fill one residential area square.

Polls open today at 10am for suggestions.

The Town Hall is being hotly tipped to take the Whitehall square from the Monopoly original, and Colchester Zoo, Colchester United, Colchester Castle, the garrison and the Jumbo could all win a place.

The Daily Gazette and Essex County Standard could also take the place of Fleet Street.

Emma Lodwick, custom games development executive, said: “We thank the public for all its votes for Colchester winning the board.

“We expect to be spoilt for choice on landmarks to fill it.

“Some said that the very popular Jumbo water tower should replace the famous Monopoly Water Works.

“Also some said that instead of Go to Jail, the board should have a command sending players to Southend.”

The board will have ten coloured sets, including train stations, utilities, heritage, leisure, arts, education, business and charities.

Colchester Mayor, Theresa Higgins, will announce the win at the town hall at 10am, along with representatives from Monopoly.

Polls for landmark suggestions will be open until April 30.

Votes should be sent to colchester@winningmoves.co.uk, the Facebook page facebook.com/colchestermonopoly or by post to MONOPOLY COLCHESTER, Winning Moves UK, 7 Praed Street, London W2 1NP.
