A CASH grant has been given to fund airborne lifesavers for the first time by Frinton and Walton Town Council.

Every year, the Essex Air Ambulance asks for grants to help keep the rescue helicopter flying.

In the past, the town council has refused as it could mean taxpayers’ money being used to fund rescues out of the area.

But this year the council is donating £200 to the charity.

Councillor Mark Platt said: “As an air ambulance pilot, I say we do it this year and start something new. Aside from flying it myself, I have seen the air ambulance land in Connaught Avenue and help our residents.

“It could help any of us at any time. You never know when you will need it, but it is vital.”

During the last financial year, the air ambulance flew 704 missions.

There are two helicopters covering Essex and Hertfordshire, with costs reaching £480,000 every month.
