COMMUNITY radio station Colne Radio has been awarded a five-year licence to broadcast on FM.
The station, based in Wivenhoe, which already broadcasts over the internet, has two years to prepare for the relaunch.
Announcing the licence award, the Broadcasting Licensing Committee highlighted the strong links the station had to the local community through its work with voluntary organisations and Essex University.
Jerry Davis, who started the station four years ago in his bedroom, said: “It all started off with an idea and support from 50 volunteers.
“Our loyal and dedicated band of volunteers has enabled us to broadcast for around four years, with much of our output produced and presented by local people.
“The licence award gives us the opportunity to better serve the communities in Colchester, Wivenhoe, Brightlingsea and the surrounding area.
“We now need to get on with the major task of fundraising and growing our volunteer base.
The station is trying to raise £10,000 to fund the new project.
Colchester MP Will Quince said: “This is excellent news and testament to the hard work and dedication of the many volunteers who work at the station.”
