A CANCER survivor from Brightlingsea donated £2,000 in support of the appeal for a new treatment centre.

Grandad Terry Wilby, of Greenhurst Road, held a night of entertainment at the Colne Yacht Club in aid of the campaign for a new cancer centre at Colchester General Hospital.

The new cancer centre campaign aims to raise £4.5million to create a centre at the hospital that will allow all cancer treatments and support groups to be brought to one place.

So far, more than £790,000 has been donated or pledged, but more money is desperately needed.

Mr Wilby, 74, went to the doctor’s suffering from a bad back.

However, it was discovered he was suffering from prostate cancer.

Mr Wilby, who used to run Brightlingsea’s Colne Yacht Club with wife Rowena, responded well to tablets and injections.

He also agreed to take part in a clinical trial to try to find new treatments, which meant he had to go to Colchester's radiotherapy centre for 30 days in a row.

Caroline Bates, fundraising manager for the Colchester Hospitals Charity, said: “We were delighted when Terry and Rowena told us about the music evening they were planning in Brightlingsea and even more thrilled that it went so well and raised such a huge amount of money for the Cancer Centre Campaign. We are very grateful to Terry and Rowena Wilby for all their hard work.”

She added: “They not only raised funds, but awareness of the Cancer Centre in and around Brightlingsea.”
