SCIENCE students were given a look behind the scenes at a village factory to see the work involved to take cereals from the farm to the supply-chain.
Donning protective clothing, the year 10 triple science pupils from Manningtree High School were allowed inside food ingredients company Edme.
They learned how Edme uses wheat, barley, rye and oat grains to produce malted flour, flakes and kibbles which are then used by bakers up and down the country to produce bread, cakes and biscuits.
In the laboratory they heard about the quality testing that takes place at every stage of the process and in the grain cleaning and flaking departments they saw what happens to the grain at each stage of the production process from sieving and separating to steaming and milling.
