A treasured Chinese restaurant held a farewell feast to mark the end of nearly 30 years in business.

Ivy Ng, who has run Ria Restaurant in Newlands Shopping Centre since 1988, said the last week was one of her best as hundreds of customers got their last orders in.

Although the popular venue was due to shut on Saturday, Ria opened for an extra day on Sunday to give regular customers one last meal and an impromptu karaoke session.

Ivy is now thinking of jetting off to Malaysia to celebrate her retirement but has still not ruled out opening another eaterie in future.

She said: "Ria was packed throughout the weekend and we were ‘forced’ to open another day because regulars couldn’t get a space.

"It is really, really nice that people are so caring - people were saying ‘What are we going to do? Where will we have our Chinese now?’.

"I am going to see how I feel about another restaurant.

"Having everybody saying goodbye made me feel very emotional and I am missing it already.”

Ivy’s last customers feasted on spare ribs, sweet and sour dishes and calamari and the restaurant was full for the last four nights.

She said: "It was one of my best weeks for a very long time.

"I can’t thank my customers enough - I had a few tears with them and we will still be friends when I see them around town."
