The RSPCA is appealing for more volunteers to look after rescued animals.
The Mid Essex branch is in need of short and long term homes for animals and are looking for volunteers to help look after the rescued and stray cats, kittens, puppies, dogs and rabbits in its care on a temporary or long term basis until good permanent homes are found for them.
For voluntary foster homes, free veterinary treatment is provided and the animals remain the property of the branch.
Anyone interested in taking on a pet more permanently are also asked to get in touch with the branch. Clive Vallis, Chairman of the RSPCA Mid Essex Branch said: “The last twelve months have seen a tremendous increase in the numbers of abandoned, neglected, abused, stray and cruelty cases within the Mid Essex Branch area.
"As a consequence we now have a large number of kittens, cats, puppies, dogs and rabbits who urgently need temporary and permanent new homes.
"By giving an animal a home, you are helping your local animal charity save on private boarding fees.
"Some people may not be able to give a permanent home but they would make a real difference to our charity in this New Year by taking on an animal for even a few weeks.
"They are ideal companions for older people or those who work from home.
"All that we ask is that anyone interested could commit to providing a good home and lots of love to these deserving animals.”
