A businessman insists a country wedding venue will not be a nightclub, after villagers raised concerns about loud music.

Houchins Wedding Barn, at Houchins Farm in Coggeshall, listed on its website that its indoor ceremony room, which includes an enclosed 'dance barn', can "transform into a nightclub for the evening" following a daytime wedding.

But owner Adam Dixon-Smith told a licensing hearing that while he did not dispute the wording, "We have no desire or intention to run a nightclub," and described weddings as "benign" events where people were unlikely to be rowdy.

Fifteen objections were made against his application for a licence to allow alcohol, music and dance from noon to midnight Monday to Sunday.

All were concerned about noise, guests falling into reservoirs and moats at the site, and increased traffic turning into and off the single track road from the A120 potentially causing accidents.

Braintree Council's licensing sub-committee, which granted the licence on Tuesday, said traffic issues were planning matters that they had no responsibility for.

But it told Houchins to close the windows in the dance area and asked the owners to ensure visitors are made aware of the open water.
