A NEW headteacher has been appointed at the King Edward VI Grammar School.

The Board of Management Governors of the school announced Thomas Carter as the new headteacher today.

He will take this position from November 1 and will be the thirty second head of KEGS since the school was founded in 1551.

The selective Chelmsford school regularly achieves outstanding results at both GCSE and A level.

The new head has a degree in Maths from Cambridge, an MBA from Warwick, PGCE from the Institute of Education and holds a diploma in French Language and Literature and an NPQH.

He has been Acting Headteacher at KEGS since September and was previously KEGS’ Deputy Headteacher and then Associate Headteacher.

Prior to this he spent five years at Westcliff High School for Boys and worked in management consultancy at the LEK Partnership, and in strategic development, before changing to a career in teaching.

Mr Carter, 45, is married with two sons, and has a serious interest in music, playing both violin and Piano, and enjoys singing, learning languages and skiing.

Commenting on his appointment, Tom Carter said: “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead such a wonderful school.

“There are significant challenges ahead for any school in the next few years, but I am filled with optimism when I reflect on the people – students, staff, parents, governors, and many others – who give so much to KEGS.

“I am looking forward to what the future has in store.”
