VITAL footpaths are now unusable for mothers with pushchairs because of cuts to cuts, it has been claimed.

Harwich town councillor Ivan Henderson has been contacted by numerous residents regarding the state of the lanes which run from Manor Lane through to Birch Avenue, meaning it is difficult for people to pass through.

The state of the walkways is the responsibility of Essex Highways.

“I have been contacted by lots of people who have asked when are they going to be cut back?” said Mr Henderson

“The lanes all over Harwich and Dovercourt have been left to get overgrown.

“Young and elderly people alike approaching me and saying they cannot get through them anymore.

“There is not enough room for a pushchair or a mobility scooter and you would not get through from Manor Lane to Highfield Avenue with either of them."

An Essex Highways spokesman said: “The footpaths in the Harwich area were cut between June 30 and July 2 and it is not anticipated that any further cuts will take place this year.

“Due to financial constraints Essex Highways has to prioritise its Public Rights of Way cutting programme”.
