THE Clacton by-election will now “officially” take place on October 9.
The date had been put forward by Prime Minister David Cameron, but was not official until it was received by Tendring Council’s returning officer, chief executive Ian Davidson.
The writ was received yesterday, following which Mr Davison confirmed the election will take place on the expected date - which is also Mr Cameron’s birthday.
The by-election follows the resignation of Tory MP Douglas Carswell, who is now set to stand for Ukip.
A spokesman for the council said: “On the same day electors for the county council division of Brightlingsea will have the opportunity to elect a new county councillor following the resignation of Roger Lord.
“The writ requiring the parliamentary by-election was issued by Parliament yesterday and was delivered to Ian Davidson today."
The closing date for nominations for the by-election is September 16 at 4pm.
Poll Cards will be sent to those on the electoral register for both of the by-elections in the next few days. Polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm on October 9.
• The last day for people to be included on the electoral register for both elections is September 23. To register go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
