HISTORIC buildings in Colchester need to be better protected or more could burn down, according to a prominent historian.
The former Sergeants’ Mess, near Roman Circus Walk, is the latest listed building to become disused, dilapidated and finally destroyed by fire in Colchester.
Historian Andrew Phillips said: “I am terrified for all the others and we are left waiting for the next one.
“A lot of time and effort which went into preserving the best of the garrison buildings for future generations.”
Colchester has 37 buildings on the heritage at-risk register, more than anywhere else in Essex.
