Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of a ferocious storm that swept across the country, uprooting trees, shattering green houses, whipping up tiles from roofs and plunging the Maldon district into darkness.
 

UK Power Networks recorded about 750,000 people in the East of England had been left without power after the full force of the storm struck in the early hours of October 16, 1987.
