We need more houses or the district will “deteriorate”.

That is the view of district councillor Miriam Lewis after learning the local economy has dropped by a staggering £100million since 2004.

The shocking figures, based on the value of the district’s goods and services (gross value added), were detailed in the independent Heart of Essex: Economic Futures Study 2012.

Miss Lewis has spoken in favour of Maldon District Council’s local development plan, which includes a proposal for 3,500 homes throughout the district, because without it she believes the economy will worsen.
