Burnham: Pet dog's amazing recovery after being hit by train

Burnham: Pet dog's amazing recovery after being hit by train Burnham: Pet dog's amazing recovery after being hit by train

A miracle dog is back home with its owners just days after being struck by a train in Burnham.

Springer spaniel Ben was catapulted into the air after being hit by the train as he attempted to run across the railway crossing in Chestnut Close.

The 12-year-old pooch, which has been owned by Wiesia and Kevin Cooper since it was a puppy, had blood gushing from its mouth and had broken its jaw, as well as fracturing its skull in four places.

It was initially given no chance of survival by vets.

But £2,000 in vet bills and a large slice of luck later, the much-loved family pet is back at home with the Coopers.

Mrs Cooper, 55, of Chestnut Close, said: “It’s amazing he’s still alive.

“He’s been taught to stop and to cross with us, but that day he didn’t.

"He’s extremely lucky.

“The vet’s didn’t give him any hope what so ever, but we never gave up on him."

Whilst I'm very glad that Ben has recovered from his terrible injuries - it still begs the question: Why was the animal not on a lead?

Would you trust a 4 year old child, however well schooled, to stand and wait at a road/rail side? NO? Then don't expect a dog to do it.

Even the most highly trained dog can be distracted/excited by noise/wind/cats/bird
s/wildlife etc., it's just not worth the risk to leave them 'off lead' in such a dangerous situation.
