A sailor who towed his boat over 200 miles to take part in Maldon’s regatta has been awarded a trophy for his efforts.

Tim Dean, 47, a fork lift truck engineer, travelled from his home in Gildersome, near Leeds, to Maldon with the 15ft sailing boat towed to his car.

He decided to make the 227-mile journey after seeing the Miles to Maldon trophy in the Practical Boat Owner magazine.

He said: “I’d been hoping to visit the South-East for years as it’s an area I’ve never sailed in and the PBO trophy was just the push I needed.

“The Blackwater’s a fabulous river and the regatta was an amazing spectacle with all the classic smacks and yachts mixing with more modern craft.”
