Calls have been made for drivers to slow down after a car careered off a road and destroyed a telephone box in Maldon.

Sharon Brandford, of Mundon Road, whose garden was ruined, said the driver was lucky to escape alive after he narrowly missed a tree and telegraph pole.

Ms Brandford, 53, had just returned from the shops with daughter Georgia, 13, and popped into a neighbour’s house when they heard a huge bang.

She recalled: “We were more concerned about the driver.

“It’s just lucky he wasn’t killed."
