Angry residents have won their first fight in the battle to stop plans for a Tesco Express on the site of an historic Maldon pub.

More than 40 campaigners voiced their opposition to changing the Cups pub, in Wantz Road, into a new 260-square-metre convenience store at a town council planning meeting on Monday.

Residents filled the room with more spilling into the corridor.

After a full debate town councillors were unanimous in opposing the Tesco bid.

The final decision will be made by Maldon District Council after October 18, when the public consultation into the application will end.
